April’s Art Exhibit Presents Artwork by Dorothy Lee
April’s Art Exhibit “Perennial Tapestries”, brought to you by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts, presents the serene, colorful, elegant artwork of local artist Dorothy Lee.
An exhibition of original alcohol ink paintings by Mrs. Lee will be on display from April 1 through April 30 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on Friday, April 1, from 6 to 8 pm. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. The reception will have complimentary beverages and hors-d’oeuvres.
The exhibit presents abstract alcohol ink paintings by Mrs. Lee, her art captures the fluidity of the medium, with energy and color. “My work reflects the wonder of how the inks blend and move when touched by an air source – either a hairdryer or air compressor (no brushwork involved). My objective is to convey to the viewer the beauty of color and form.”
Mrs. Lee’s artistic philosophy stemmed from an early age, while attending kindergarten she opened her first box of Crayola 64 crayons and was awed by the variety of colors. “Life got in the way of that innocent awe until recently. I discovered alcohol ink painting during the Pandemic lockdown of 2020, learning this method of painting from generous alcohol ink artists. This medium has become my Crayola Box of 64 and now I get to share it.”
Prior exhibitions include Celebrate Swarthmore Artists and Makers Market.
Mrs. Lee is a retired Special Education teacher, mother of two sons, and grandmother to six grandchildren. Presently, she is the designer for the homes she and her husband renovate.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are M-Th 9am – 8pm, Fri 10am – 7pm, Sat 10am – 3pm, Sun 1 – 5pm.

March’s Art Exhibit presents artwork by Skip Gosnell, Reception Friday, March 4th, 6-8pm

March’s Art Exhibit “Seeking the Next Wave”, presents the artwork of Skip Gosnell, opening March 2nd.
An exhibition of original acrylic paintings and mixed media by local artist Skip Gosnell will be on display from March 2 through March 28 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on Friday March 4th, from 6 to 8 pm. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. Complimentary beverages and hors-d’oeuvres to enjoy!
The exhibit presents paintings by Mr. Gosnell, the subject matter primarily in seascapes and other abstract designs using acrylics and india inks (among other media) on canvas. His work captures the energy of ocean waves and fluid motion of the sea along with experimental graphic design inspired abstracts. “Waves continuously roll up the shoreline yet are never the same. Mixing media, experimenting with how paint types blend and separate, and varying varnishes with epoxy resin often lead to rich unexpected results”. Mr. Gosnell creates layered works with an illusion of depth, pops of color, and contrasting shapes.
Mr. Gosnell sold his first painting at his high school art show, then continued his art education at the University of Delaware with a BS in Visual Communications. With a background in graphic design and photography, he continues developing his painting style through experimentation, Plein air painting, and artist workshops. Follow his art on Instagram and check out his online art gallery at skipgosnellart.com
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are M-Th 9am – 8pm, Fri 10am – 7pm, Sat 10am – 3pm, Sun 1 – 5pm.

New Exhibit coming on February 4th!

Student Art from Swarthmore Friends Nursery School
An exhibition of mixed media art by these budding student artists will be on display from February 4 through February 28 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The opening reception is free and open to the public this Friday, February 4th from 5:30-7:30pm
The art at Swarthmore Friends Nursery School is process-based with a focus on fine motor development. The goal is for the children to discover different ways to create art. It just takes a little bit of guidance and off they go. Kim Scott, artist and art teacher, glowingly states, “More often than not, they will create something in a way that I never would have thought to do. Everything in the exhibit has been cut, drawn, painted, glued, and colored by the children”.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are M-Th 9am – 8pm, Fri 10am – 7pm, Sat 10am – 3pm, Sun 1 – 5pm.
Artist/Teacher Bio-Statements:
Kim Scott has been teaching art to preschool and kindergarten students for 16 years or they have been teaching her. When she is not in the art room, she can be found digging in the dirt or doodling and painting in some corner of her house.
Meliss Hoy has a background in sculpture and art therapy. When she is not at SFNS, she is volunteering with Art Goes to School or SRA, dancing in her kitchen with her family, running, or sewing into the wee hours of the night.
