New Art Exhibit Coming in April! SFoA presents artwork by Melissa Husted-Sherman & Polly Dressler Bech.

A shared exhibition of original paintings by local artists Melissa Husted-Sherman and Polly Dressler Bech will be on display from April 3rd through April 29th, 2019, at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on Friday April 5th, from 6:30pm to 8pm. Both the exhibit and the opening are free, kid friendly and open to the public.

Ms. Bech has been creating most of her life, in one form or another – paintings, clothing, collage, computer graphic art, and most recently quilting. “Something about the whole process of constructing a quilted art piece just worked for me, so I kept working at making them.”

Most of Ms. Bech’s current pieces have started with solar printing her own fabric. She collects leaves in her yard or while on walks through town to be used for printing materials. “These prints capture the essence of nature for me, because this is my natural world, being surrounded by trees.” A love of, and respect for, the natural world has been a theme in Ms. Bech’s life and throughout her work. “I also love playing with color schemes, light and dark, mixing this traditional art form of quilting with newer surface design techniques – it’s a heartfelt connection to the past that I feel when working with my hands, creating with cloth, needle, and thread.”

Ms. Husted-Sherman, after working in crisis counseling, left the field intending to pursue a degree in landscape architecture. A landscape design course reignited her love of drawing and painting, leading to another change in direction – using painting to capture her experience of the landscape into color and line.  Since then, she has had multiple solo and group exhibitions throughout the region.

Ms. Husted-Sherman’s work has moved away from pure representation of the landscape to a more abstract expression of ideas involving the impact of the passage of time and the impermanence of beauty. “My initial objective is to capture the beauty of an individual moment. I am not attempting to make a copy of a scene, but to capture the essence of an experience.  I might be moved to paint by light and shadow, plants in the landscape, or by the countless colors in a piece of fruit. Whatever my source of inspiration, ultimately, the painting becomes as much about the process of painting itself as about the initial visual spark.”

Inspiration for Ms. Husted-Sherman’s work comes from such diverse sources as Renaissance painting, decaying buildings, maps, architectural diagrams, erosion, and evolving landscapes.  She lives and works in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

Exhibit hours are Monday to Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 10 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 3 pm, Sunday 1 to 5 pm.

The exhibit is sponsored by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts. For information about Swarthmore Friends of the Arts, visit www.swarthmorearts.org or contact Exhibit Chair Martha Perkins, martha.perkins@gmail.com.

Since moving to the Philadelphia area 37 years ago Ms. Lavin has been very active with the Community Arts Center in Wallingford; serving on the Board of Directors for six years and participating in weekly workshops for over 30 years.  “The workshops were an opportunity to work with and share ideas with other artists”.  She was also the founding President of Swarthmore Friends of the Arts.

December’s Art Exhibit presents artwork by Skip Gosnell, opening November 27th through December.

December’s Art Exhibit “Something for Everyone”, presents the artwork of Skip Gosnell, opening November 27th through December.

An exhibition of original acrylic paintings and mixed media by local artist Skip Gosnell will be on display from November 27 through December 2018 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on Friday November 30th, from 6 to 8 pm.  Both the exhibit and the opening are free, kid friendly and open to the public.

The exhibit presents paintings and drawings by Mr. Gosnell, the subject matter primarily in landscape and abstract using acrylics on canvas. His work captures the contrast of bright and shadow, using a visual language of shape, form and color with a degree of freedom from real world visual references. “I love experimenting with colors and brush strokes that express an emotion or mood of a particular scene or object; quite often the end result is unexpected, filled with interesting forms and textures”. Using varying tools along with traditional brushes, including tongue depressors, plastic wrap, chop sticks, to name a few, Mr. Gosnell creates layered works with an illusion of depth, pops of color, and contrasting shapes. “I finally got it through my head to just let go and enjoy the creative process.”

Mr. Gosnell sold his first painting at his high school art show, then continued his art education at the University of Delaware with a BS in Visual Communications. With a background in graphic design and photography, he continues developing his painting style through experimenting with multiple techniques and attending artist workshops.

Exhibit hours are Monday to Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 10 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 3 pm, Sunday 1 to 5 pm.

November’s Art Exhibit presents the artwork by Pete Prown, opening November 6th through November 24th.

November’s Art Exhibit presents the artwork of Pete Prown, opening November 6th through November 24th.

An exhibition of original paintings by local artist Pete Prown will be on display from November 6 through November 24, 2018 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on Friday November 9,  from 6 to 8 pm. Both the exhibit and the opening are free and open to the public.

The exhibit presents paintings by Mr. Prown, the subject matter primarily landscapes, botanicals and, increasingly, portraits of animals. “I grew up in New England surrounded by farms, pastures, flowers, and wooded landscapes, and this is often reflected in my paintings. Everything seems to refer back to that idea, along with my 20-years of work in the professional-gardening sphere. My ongoing work is about challenging myself to try new subjects in that vein, as well as still lifes. This is rewarding and keeps me moving forward.”

Pete Prown has led a 30-year career in journalism, working in two dissimilar fields – the music business and Philadelphia gardening world. He’s a writer, magazine and web editor, and landscape photographer. Pete is also an author with several books to his credit.

He’s exhibited his work in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, and continues to paint and study avidly. Local exhibits have included:  Wallingford Community Art Center, Rose Valley Museum at Thunderbird Lodge, Juried Painting Show Media Arts Council, Swarthmore Friends of the Arts, Helen Kate Furness Library charity auction in Rose Valley, Rose Valley 75th Anniversary Exhibition.

An exhibition of original artwork by local artist Joan Sobel will be on display from September 5 through September 29, 2018 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on Friday September 7, from 5 to 7 pm.  Both the exhibit and the opening are free and open to the public.

Mrs. Sobel began painting as an empty nester, taking lessons at local community art centers, along with countless hours of exploration. “The work I produce is inspired by a love of nature and outdoor spaces. I find myself drawn to the colors I see when looking out the window. A painting evolves as color meets paper or canvas, free to change with each brush stroke. I begin without a real plan, the composition and colors on the palette guide me. No painting is complete until I feel its sense of balance and harmony,”

Exhibit hours are Monday to Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 10 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 3 pm, Sunday 1 to 5 pm.

The exhibit is sponsored by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts.

July’s Upcoming Exhibit “My Cognosphere”, presents the artwork of Brit Ray, opening July 3rd through July 30th.

My_Cognosphere2_by_Brit_Ray(8x10)An exhibition of original artwork by local artist Brit Ray will be on display from July 3 through July 30, 2018 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. Exhibit hours are M-Th 9am – 8pm, Fri 10am – 7pm, Sat 10am – 3pm, Sun 1 – 5pm.

About the Artist

“I was born at a very early age,” quipped W.C. Field. To which I reply, “And so was my cognosphere.” —Cognosphere being a word I coined for that place in the mind where our own peculiar abstractions accrue. (What’s in your cognosphere?)

Do you ever wonder why just seeing things isn’t enough? Why do some of us feel the impulse to translate a face, a scene, or a concept into pencil marks, paint, clay, or photos? I was thirteen years old and doing a pastel drawing of the Hudson River Drive when I first asked myself that question. I look at that picture now and remember at which stroke the question intruded itself.

As if in pursuit of an answer, I have saved samples of my art from every stage of my life. When I look at fifth-grade sketches of my classmates, I remember just what those friends were like. My application portfolio for New York’s Music & Art High School is filled with pictures (each bearing the required label “done from life and without supervision”) that recall my family and friends and the spaces we inhabited. At Dickinson College and Columbia University, while majoring in English and studying Philosophy, I illustrated, edited, and wrote for student publications. Later, as an editor, I continued to engage in both the visual and performing arts. During my 25-year career as a copy and speech writer at the University of Pennsylvania, I additionally took photos for publications, wrote and produced a musical, and created and illustrated cryptic crosswords.

In recent years, I have taken classes at the Community Art Center with Matiko Mamaladze (oils), Olga Nielsen (sculpture and pastels), Sally Paynter (acrylics), and Dan Shipley (oils), while exhibiting at CAC and Swarthmore Borough Hall. When I paint in oil or acrylic, my references are from life, my own photographs, or great photos I find in the NY Times. If I am doing something purely imaginative, I like the more immediate mediums of pencil, watercolor, pastel, or ink. I have done two portraits from life in clay.

My cognosphere teems with images and concepts from the thousands of books and essays I’ve read, all the movies and TV shows I’ve seen, all the radio programs I’ve heard, all the songs I’ve sung, and all the paintings I’ve been awed by. All these abstractions are the output of other minds, acting on each other, going back and back. And yet (like each one of us) I retain the childhood ability to experience my own world in my own way. My favorite “abstraction haunts” are New York’s MOMA and the Neue Galerie. The period I’m most drawn to in art is late 19th and early 20th Century American and European representational painting, drawing, and sculpture. I consider illustration to be a “Fine Art.”

As much as I like doing art, I love seeing the work of others, including that of my husband, Chris, and daughters, Waverley, Wendelin and Vanessa. I am grateful to the artist/volunteers of Swarthmore Friends of the Arts for giving local artists such a fine place to roll out our cognospheres.
