Four Decades of Photographs

Emily Richardson (1927 – 2020) always had an eye for color, texture, composition, and beauty. After many years visiting art museums and studying paintings in books, she began creating her own art with photography in the late 1970’s. Soon her passion for the picture took flight. Early subjects included Ridley Creek State Park, her hometown of Lancaster, fields of flowers in Texas, and scenes by the sea in Rockport, Massachusetts.

After she moved to Swarthmore in 1990, Emily was frequently seen on campus and in the borough with her camera. She captured images of the architecture and horticulture of the Swarthmore College campus including the rose and holly gardens, and the brilliant arrangements of tulips and other flowers planted in the borough. Emily did her own framing and created note cards so that many people could enjoy her images. She sold her cards and framed photographs at The Studio in Swarthmore, which was located on Park Ave for many years. Visitors to the annual group photography shows at Borough Hall could always count on seeing Emily’s photographs. In addition, Swarthmore Friends of the Arts supported two previous solo exhibits of her work. 

The exhibit will be on display from August 18 through September 20 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore.

Exhibit hours are Monday-Tuesday, 9:30am to 6pm, Wednesday-Thursday, 9:30am to 7pm, Friday, 9:30am to 5pm, Saturday, 10am to 1pm
