The Shifting Gears: Finding Intimacy in Men’s Friendships, is a photo/narrative project created by Robert Heasley, Neal Wecker, and photographer Debbie Halpern, displays and gives voice to male friendships that transcend many barriers. This exhibit portrays close and intimate relationships between male friends. It is about making visible what is possible. The photos will be on display from March 1 through March 30 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Opening reception Friday March 6:  With talk about men’s lives and relationships – 5:00-7:00 – talk at 6:00.

The idea emerged from how Neal and Robert felt about their own friendship. As they shared their idea with others, they heard: “I know a man with a friendship like that,” and their range grew, from teen to senior and from coast to coast. “While talking with these men, we were struck by how valued their friendships were, by them, but also by others in their lives – their spouses, parents, children, and others who know them well.”

“While we hope that the friendships depicted here will help you reflect on the social and personal nature of such relationships,” says Mr. Heasley, “we also hope that this exhibit will provide an aesthetic experience – both in the photos themselves and in the beauty of seeing men who so clearly enjoy each other’s company.” 

Exhibit hours are Monday to Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 10 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 3 pm, Sunday 1 to 5 pm.
